Swapping TV for activity makes a big impact on how you age, study shows
Swapping out time in front of the TV for physical activity is associated with better chances of healthy aging, according to a recent study. Replacing TV time with light physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and sleep is beneficial to healthy aging, says the study’s senior author. The study analyzed data from a large group of people aged 50 or older and found that each additional two hours of sitting to watch TV was associated with a decrease in the chances of aging in a healthy way. On the other hand, adding two hours of light physical activity increased the odds of healthy aging. Sitting for extended periods has negative health outcomes, especially as we get older. Sedentary behavior is linked to early death and an increased risk of heart disease. Engaging in physical activity is crucial for reducing cardiovascular risk and blood pressure. Incorporating movement into daily routines, such as using a standing desk or having walking meetings, can help counteract the negative impacts of prolonged sitting. It is recommended to pair TV time with healthy behaviors or set limits for screen time using available tools and apps.
