Suicide rates among college athletes in the United States have doubled in the past 20 years, making it the second leading cause of death after accidents, according to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Despite having support systems and a sense of community with their teams, collegiate athletes are just as susceptible to mental health concerns. The study found that Division III athletes had lower suicide rates compared to Division I and II athletes. Male cross-country athletes had the highest rates of suicide. The study also highlighted the importance of targeted interventions and support systems for student-athletes, particularly during vulnerable periods.
