A study suggests that semaglutide may have potential in reducing substance use, particularly in relation to tobacco use. The study analyzed the medical records of over 200,000 people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking semaglutide. The findings showed that those using semaglutide were less likely to seek medical help or prescriptions for tobacco use disorders compared to those taking other diabetes medications. However, experts emphasize the need for further research before using semaglutide for smoking cessation off-label. Although there is potential, more data is necessary to determine the medication’s efficacy and appropriate dosage.
