Forecasters believe that Tropical Storm Hone may become a hurricane as it passes south of the Big Island. It is expected to bring powerful winds and rainfall to the eastern islands starting Friday night and statewide by early next week. The storm could cause strong and damaging winds, heavy rainfall, high surf, and storm surge. Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible on the Big Island, with 2 to 4 inches on smaller islands. The storm will also bring ocean swells that could cause life-threatening surf. Additionally, the storm may alleviate drought conditions but increase the risk of wildfires due to tropical-storm-force winds. Hurricane Gilma is also on track to potentially impact the Hawaiian Islands. Last year, Hurricane Lane brought record-breaking rainfall to Hawaii.
